Red list countries

In the UK, Healthcare organisations and the government are not allowed to recruit Nurses, Midwives and other Healthcare Professionals from nations that have lower than sufficient numbers of staff in these areas.

There are other potential reasons as to why a country may be placed on the red list. These could be for political reasons, uncertainty in the country for example, or the government may be inefficient and therefore difficult to deal with.

International recruitment from red list nations has been utilised highly especially by western nations. These nations include the UK, Germany and Sweden. International recruitment in this form has been especially effective due to Nurses, Midwives and other Healthcare Professionals having better career progression opportunities and higher wage potential in the medical field in developed nations.

Another reason may be that many countries on the red list are still developing nations, this comes with many potential challenges in terms of the country’s infrastructure, the rights of minorities in the country, extreme weather, drought and many more potential reasons. With these underlying issues, it’s understandable that skilled professionals may want to apply their skills in another country.

The red list is an important measure to have in place because it means that the countries on the red list can retain a sufficient number of Nurses and Midwives to serve their populations, reducing the effect on the countries of Healthcare Professionals leaving for developed nations.

Whilst governments and Healthcare Organisations are not allowed to recruit from red list countries, individuals are still allowed to apply for jobs in these developed nations and train to work in the Healthcare sector. It has to be individually organised by the person who is trying to relocate.
